Hanukkah Cookie

Hanukkah is a festival of religious observance, fun and feasting. Delicious Hanukkah food is prepared during the eight-day festival to mark the celebrations. When the Jewish women trudge into the kitchen to make Hanukkah dinner, their children and the entire family members eagerly wait for the Hanukkah cookies to be served. A variety of Hanukkah cookies is prepared during the festival. These Hanukkah cookies are truly lip smacking, at the same time, visual delight, as most of the cookies are prepared in the shape of Hanukkah symbols such as the Star of David. Here are some well-known Hanukkah cookie recipes.

Hanukkah star cookies

Ingredients:
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
For icing:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 2 drops blue food color
Directions:
  • Blend the butter and sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer to get a creamy mixture.
  • Add slightly beaten egg and vanilla essence to the mixture and mix well.
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add this mixture to the creamy mixture and stir until smooth.
  • Refrigerate the dough for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Divide the dough into two portions.
  • On a floured board, roll out each portion of the dough with a thickness of 1/4 inch.
  • Cut out shapes using 3- inch cookie cutters and place the cookies on ungreased baking trays.
  • Bake the cookies for 7 minutes, until the edges are light brown.
  • Take out the cookies and let them cool on a rack.
  • To prepare the icing, blend the sugar, lemon juice, and water in a bowl. Divide the icing into two portions. Add blue food color to one of the portions and mix until the color is uniform. With the help of a small spatula, spread the blue icing over the warm cookies.
  • Put the white icing on a piping bag with a star tip and pipe designs over the cookies.
  • Your delicious Hanukkah star cookies are ready to serve!
Hanukkah orange cookies

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
Directions:
  • In a large bowl, blend the shortening, sugar, egg, orange juice, baking powder, and 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour.
  • On a generously floured board, roll out the dough with the thickness of 1/4 inch.
  • Cut the dough using 3- inch Hanukkah cookie cutters.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Place the cookies on an ungreased baking tray and bake them for 10 minutes until light brown.
  • Decorate the cookies with chocolate chip or sprinkle raisins on the warm cookies.
  • Your orange Hanukkah cookies are ready to serve!
